Chautauqua Special

Historically, Chautauquas were a popular activity from 1880 to 1920. Traveling Chautauqua-circuit troupes played under large canvas tents in hundreds of Midwestern towns. Nebraska City hosted Chautauquas in the early 1900’s in “Morton Park” which is now the grounds of Arbor Lodge. Ironically, World War I caused a slackening of interest. Over time, vaudeville, movies, and radio gradually replaced Nebraska Chautauquas, which had once entertained, educated, and inspired thousands. Nebraska City last hosted a Chautauqua in 1975. This event in 2017 will be the first time Nebraska City will host Chautauqua since Humanities Nebraska revived, a traditional gathering in 1986.
