May is Bike Month, and if you know me at all, you know Iām always looking for an excuse to get out on a bicycle.Ā
Whether itās a quick ride around town, a few miles on the Steamboat Trace Trail, or a multi-day adventure somewhere farther from home, thereās just something about exploring on two wheels that slows life down in the best possible way. I ride because I love being outside and immersed in nature. The view from two wheels is simply a different way to experience a place. It's also some of my favorite thinking timeāa chance to clear my head, let the creative juices flow, and spend a little quiet time with God while enjoying the journey.
And apparently⦠cyclists really do find their way to Whispering Pines.
In fact, the cyclist pictured above is Gary. While I was working on this blog, he called looking for a room after riding 125 miles in one day. What started as a planned overnight stop turned into a two-night stay as he took a well-earned rest day to enjoy Nebraska City before continuing his journey.
Over the years, weāve welcomed touring cyclists, weekend riders, and couples traveling through Nebraska City with bikes strapped to their cars or fully loaded for long-distance adventures. Some are riding across states. Others are simply enjoying a relaxing getaway with their bikes along for the weekend.
No matter the journey, we love being part of the ride.
šæ Why Ride Around Nebraska City?
What makes biking around Nebraska City special isn't a network of major trails or a bustling cycling scene. It's the opportunity to meander, explore, and experience the area at your own pace.
The Nebraska City area offers scenic rides through Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, historic neighborhoods, and tree-lined streets that reveal a different side of town when viewed from a bicycle seat. Just a few miles away, the Steamboat Trace Trail provides 22 miles of converted railroad corridor stretching through southeast Nebraska, making it a favorite destination for cyclists looking for a leisurely ride.
Some rides are short enough for an afternoon outing. Others can easily turn into a full day of exploring.
And after a day on two wheels, there's something especially satisfying about returning to a quiet property surrounded by towering pines and knowing it's finally time to relax.
š“ Cyclists Welcome Here
One of the things I love most about the cycling community is that no two ridesāor ridersāare exactly alike.
Some arrive with sleek road bikes and clipped-in shoes. Others roll in with fully loaded touring bikes carrying everything they need for the journey ahead. We've hosted riders crossing multiple states, couples bringing bikes along for a weekend getaway, and adventurers discovering southeast Nebraska one mile at a time.
Every rider has a story. And the stories...oh, the stories!
We understand the little things that matter at the end of a long day on the bike.
A Few Cyclist-Friendly Touches We Offer:
- Space in the garage for bike storage
- Hose access to rinse off bikes after a day on the road
- A real bike pump available if needed
- Ice-filled water bottles before heading out again
- Recommendations for local attractions, restaurants, and places to exploreāincluding nearby Arbor Lodge State Historical Park when you're ready to stretch your legs and take a break from the saddle
Perhaps that's why I've always enjoyed hosting cyclists. As someone who loves bicycle touring myself, I understand both the challenges and the joys of exploring on two wheels. There's an immediate connection and appreciation for the journey that brought them here.
Whether youāre stopping for one night or settling in for a long weekend, weāre happy to help make the ride a little easier.
š After the Ride: Relax & Recover
One of the best parts of biking all day is the reward waiting afterward.
At Whispering Pines, that might mean:
- indulging in Jeanna's homemade chocolate chip cookies after arriving
- stretching out with a glass of wine on the porch or relaxing in a hammock while listening to the waterfall nearby
- slipping into a robe and heading for a soak in the hot tub under the stars
- scheduling an on-site massage to truly unwind
And of course, breakfast is included every morningāsomething cyclists always appreciate before another day on the road.
Ā Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest differenceāan ice-cold lemonade after a summer ride, a glass of iced tea on the porch, or, in Gary's case, a couple cups of hot tea after arriving on a chilly evening.
After miles in the saddle, those little comforts matter.
šŗ A Few Favorite Local Ride Ideas
Not every ride needs to be measured in miles.
Some of my favorite local rides include pedaling through historic neighborhoods, avoiding the cobblestone streetsāHA!āand making my way downtown for a different perspective on Nebraska City.
If the ride happens to end with a cold beer at the historic Prohibition-era bar,Ā Dinty Moore's,Ā well, that's not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
Whether you're looking for a leisurely afternoon ride or simply a new way to experience the area, a bicycle has a way of revealing details that are easy to miss from behind the wheel of a car. I'm always happy to recommend a few of my favorite routes, whether that's a ride to the Four Corners, a historic tour through town, or something in between.
And if you happen to explore around town with me, you may even spot "Froggy," my longtime bicycle mascot, making an occasional appearance along the way. That's a story for another day.
š² More Than Just a Place to Sleep
For many cyclists, the best stops along the journey are the ones that feel welcoming and personal.
Thatās exactly what we hope Whispering Pines becomes for riders passing through Nebraska City.
A place to rest tired legs.
A place to enjoy a hot breakfast before heading out again.
A place to relax in the hot tub after a long ride.
And maybe even a place that becomes part of the story you tell about the trip later.
If your travels bring you through southeast Nebraska with bicycles in tow, weād love to host you.
Bring the bikes. Weāll take care of the rest.
