Apple Butter in the Crock Pot

It’s Apple season in Nebraska City and we love to savor Apples long into winter!  Made with local apples from our nearby orchards, it’s just one way that we incorporate local produce in our cooking.  It will also provide an amazing aroma as it simmers all day long!

Best Air Freshener EVER! And, it taste good in so many ways! 8 pounds will fill a large oval crockpot.

Ingredients
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 2 T. cinnamon
  • 1 t. nutmeg
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 8 pound apples
Instructions
  1. Combine first 5 dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Peel* and core the apples. Cut them into quarters and add to bowl.

  3. Mix with dry ingredients until apples are covered.

  4. Place into crock pot. Put the lid on the crock pot and cook on low for about 9 hours or until apples are soft.

  5. Take the lid off and let some of the liquid cook down for about 30 minutes. Add in 1 T. vanilla and puree with an immersion blender. If you’re using a regular blender to puree the mixture, be safe, let it cool and do it in batches.

Recipe Notes

• Save peels and tear into ~3 inch strips and spread onto 2 cookie sheets. Bake in a 250° oven for 4 -5 hours or until crisp. You can check every few hours and turn if necessary to get an even bake.

As you can imagine, recipe talk is often a subject at the breakfast table.  Multiple guests have mentioned adding in a few cinnamon candied ‘red-hots’. We’re certainly going to give that a try next time! YUM!
